It has been at least 15 years since we last drove over Hoover Dam. It was always a tedious drive as you had to wind up and down a narrow road following bumper to bumper busses and semi's. Now they have a bypass bridge to avoid the congestion. However, we had never stopped to take a tour of the dam. This time we corrected that and took a tour.

Our GPS told us that the fastest route from Mesquite, Nevada was through some back roads to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. After driving for about 15 minutes, we began to wonder if this short cut was a wise decision. We later learned that travel through Las Vegas on I-15 would have been very slow and this alternative route was truly the best.

We wanted to take the long tour of the dam, but because of the heat we were only able to take the shorter power plant tour. It was impressive walking through the tunnels to see the generators and hearing all the stories about the dam construction from the tour guide, and visiting the museum. The attention to detail and the art deco they included in the construction was cool. Kathy wanted to hike across the Pat Tillman bridge, but there had already been enough hiking the previous 4 days! Maybe next time we will take a short hike through the historic railroad tunnels.

After our tour, we headed down to Kingman, Arizona for a nice lunch at Calico's, which is highly rated by Trip Adviser.
